I'm also down for cross-canon AUs, all the canons represented in my muse list should be a good indicator all the options! (But I think I am always especially down for Pokemon AUs)

[It started out as a simple experiment.

Of course, one could say that everything starts as an experiment. Life, love, and all the great discoveries of this world are a few of the many possibilities that exist, and Hange's learned early enough in life that risks must be taken in order to achieve the sort of change that will affect them for centuries to come.

However, the 'risks' she's taken this time around have ended in part of her laboratory being set ablaze, so maybe she'll need to readjust her philosophy for the next go around. Thankfully, the foundation of Science and its universal laws were based on trial and error, and facing failure was merely crossing out one impossibility in the grand scheme of things.

It could also mean potentially burning the entire science building, however, which is why Hange scrambles over to the other side of the laboratory to unhook the fire extinguisher before aiming the spray right over the roaring fires.

Maybe she should've been better prepared when she dropped that 5lb Gummy Bear in a large beaker filled with potassium chlorate.]

[When Korra first hears the news from Jinora, she can hardly believe it. Aang, still intact in the spirit world somehow? It sounds too good to be true.

With her Avatar duties keeping her from traveling to either portal at the moment, the best she can do is wait for a breather and enter the world through meditation. It takes her longer than Jinora would, but eventually she gets there, wandering through the library and letting that little tug at her own spirit guide her.

She finds him in the vibrant meadows filled with flowers and takes a moment to just watch him.]

[The twelve-year old airbender is sitting humbly in the field, taking in the sight and the scents, without yet noticing the person watching him. Everything seems so much more majestic than he recalls the spirit world being. He closes his eyes for a moment, at which point a spirit butterfly lands on his nose.

He giggles and springs to his feet to pursue it.]

[She can't believe it. It's really him. It's surreal watching him chase the butterfly like that, when she all she remembers of him is the adult with a serious expression, speaking to her, fixing her bending.]

...Aang?

[Korra finally speaks up, taking a step toward him.]

How did you get here?

[He comes to a stop when he hears the girl calling him. And he looks over towards her oddly, as if trying to recognize her.]

Hi! That's me! To answer your question...

...

...I don't know!

[It's true that a wide variety of concepts do start with experiments. This tends to include death, destruction and various uncomfortable applications throughout the world. Oh, it seems he forget to mention laboratory fires. It's a good thing that one is going on right now as a reminder.

Jade is soon framed in the doorway, wit a large box in hand, observing with as cool a head as one can in this situation. Perhaps he's already determined that the damage of this blaze would be negligible. Or maybe he's a sadist. It would be unfair to rule out all of the possibilities.]

Professor Zoe! Preparing a special class on firefighting, are we? You must be more versatile than I imagined.

[Hange's still in the process of extinguishing the massive flames when Jade appears at the doorway, and despite the risk of burning her entire laboratory down, she can't help but shoot him a smile over her shoulder anyway.]

You know how I usually am, Professor Curtiss. [She yells over the roar of the fire extinguisher.] Multitasking makes for a more exciting life! I'm sure it'll come in handy when the kids inevitably start their own explosions.

[A few more pumps is all she needs before the fire's fully extinguished, and Hange sets down the canister to wipe the sweat off her brow.]

[Well that fire does seem pretty bad. But he's mildly impressed at how quickly it's contained and then casually strides forward to set the box down on an un-burned counter.]

This must be one of those 'new age' teaching practices I hear so much about. [He says dryly with a smirk. With the box set down, his hands are free to retreat into their burrow which is his pockets.] At this rate, you may as well give your class the prerequisite of being qualified firefighters.

You think? [Hange starts, walking over to her desk in the front of the laboratory to pull out a pair of gloves.] It might be more exciting for them to learn as they go.

[Flexing her fingers once she slips both on, she grabs a pair of tongs and a nearby bin, setting the latter aside on the laboratory table closest to the explosion's remains before proceeding to pick at the glass shards.]

So what's in the box? [Hange asks after a moment, pointing at the object beside Jade.] I wasn't aware they started allowing you to order human remains for your classes.

[The lack of recognition hurts her at first—how could he not know who she is? Then, Korra fights that feeling back. She was the one who let Vaatu break her and Raava’s bond. This is her fault, something she needs to fix, not Aang’s. For now, it’s enough that he’s still here.

She walks closer.]

So what do you remember?

[He looks on thoughtfully. Was that hurt he saw in her eyes? As he speaks, he absentmindedly raises his hand, and the spirit butterfly lands on it, playfully nuzzling at his fingers.]

Well, I'm the Avatar. I was raised by the air nomads, I got frozen for a hundred years, I met Katara and Sokka and everyone. I showed a bunch of people my marble trick, I learned all the bending forms, and I beat the fire lord and then Katara kissed me. And... and I'm not sure about anything.

Except that... [He gives a meek shrug.] I'm here now?

[Jade had smirked as he watched her pick at her mess, and then gives a beleaguered sigh while he goes on sarcastically.]

My, how I wish that were the case, but it seems that my petition did not garner enough signatures.

[And he starts to open the box.]

We'll have to settle for frogs once again. And I'm afraid that still don't quite have a skill for naming the subjects in question...

I'm sure it's all about the approach, Professor Curtiss. [Hange jabs with a grin.] I wouldn't be the first to admit that you aren't exactly the most persuasive guy around.

[Or more like he has the tendency to scare off a majority of his audience. Granted, she seems to possess the exact same problem, though she's far less aware of that fact.

Once she manages to dump the larger shards into the bin, Hange makes her way over to Jade to peer into the box.]

But naming's the best part! [Is it really, Hange...] How about you name them all after all the campus professors? I'm sure a kid or two would get a kick out of gutting Professor Dist.

["And Katara kissed me"--your priorities, Aang.]

That's right. You took the Fire Lord's bending away and ended the war. There's supposed to be a lot more after that, but...

[There has to be a reason Aang can only remember this much.]

[He has the best priorities ok.]

Buttt... it's not here. [He knocks on his head.] Instead, everything's all spirit-y. What's up with that?

[She drops onto the grass near him, looking down at her feet with a sigh.]

It's...probably my fault. I'm sorry. I didn't even think I'd get to see you again, especially not like this.

[Nothing quite like blunt honesty, right?]

[He looks at her with a frown.]

What do you mean? How could this be your fault? And... how exactly do you know me, any way? [She doesn't look like any Water Triber he's ever known...]

It's my fault because...I'm the Avatar after you.

[Korra turns, catching his eyes.]

Harmonic Convergence was just a couple of weeks ago...and it looks like me leaving the spirit portals open is having a lot more consequences than I thought it would.

You're... the Avatar? [He asks in hollow surprise looking at her anew. Looking into her eyes, he sees something familiar. A reflection of himself; a reflection of insecurity and fear.]

I'm still learning a-about all of this. But... This can't all be bad, can it?

It's...not the only thing. [This is the hard part. Korra's hands clench tightly as shame spreads through her.]

I...when I faced the spirit of darkness the first time, I failed. He--the cycle is broken. I managed to beat him in the end, but it was already too late. That's probably why you're stuck here like this.

[Her voice gets softer.] I'm sorry.

What do you mean? The cycle can't be broken. [He shakes his head.] I'm here. And- and you're here.

Oh? Perhaps you could spare some of your innate charisma, in that case. [There's definitely sarcasm underlining those words.

And there, with the box opened, there's the array of dead frogs. He peers over them curiously.]

It's a remarkable idea, and I'm sure that the rest of the faculty would be flattered when word inevitably reaches their ears. But there are a few conundrums at hand. [He throws his arms up in a shrug.] Are any of these specimen at a level lowly enough to truly be comparable with Professor Dist?

[Whoa, that's rude as heck Jade. Still, Hange's enough of a sport to let that one slide for now, instead paying more mind to the box once the latter actually opens it.]

Ah, you've got a point. [She sneers. While she personally has no ill feelings for Dist (she can appreciate talent regardless of where it actually comes from), Jade's relationship with the man is infamous with both the student body and faculty. Most are usually smart enough to avoid it altogether, but it's interesting sort of ordeal that draws Hange closer like a moth to a flame.]

Maybe you should think about dissecting cockroaches some time down the road.

It’s kind of hard to explain. The cycle was broken because…Vaatu split our soul from Raava. We didn’t die, but I.

[Korra closes her eyes.]

I lost the connection to all of our past lives. It didn’t come back, even after we bonded with Raava again.

Really? [His eyes are widened in disbelief, as he tries to process it.] You mean... you're still there. But the rest of us... we're not?

[Korra bounds through the spirit portal and into the spirit world. This time, she at least has some good news to share with the past Avatar.]

Aang?

[She closes her eyes, trying to get a feel for where he is.]

[It's been a while since Korra last visited him. He's lazing by a pond with some dragonfly-bunny spirits when he hears her voice, when he feels her zoning in on him. In a way, some connection might still be intact. The power one has in the spirit world might also be helpful.]

Korra? [And suddenly, it feels like the distance between them is compressing.] Is that you?

[She flinches.]

That's...what we thought. Until Jinora said she found you here. In the Spirit World.

[She tries not to sound too hopeful.] I mean, if you're here, then maybe the others are here, too...

Aang! [Her eyes fly open and she smiles. She still has a long way to go when it comes to navigating the Spirit World, but between her and Aang, she's sure she'll get better.]

Yeah, it's me. [Korra takes a few steps, all the while focusing on Aang's energy, and suddenly she's right there beside him.] Whoa, that's new.

You just have to believe, Korra. [He smiles warmly.] No one's ever really gone. Not completely. We're gonna find them all completely, okay? [He reaches over to hold her hand supportively.]

You must be getting better at the spirit world! [He says with a smile, before he wraps her in a hug that seems tight for someone as scrawny as him.] It's great to see, Korra. How are you?

[Wow you've got some grip for someone with such skinny arms!!! But Korra wouldn't expect any less from her past self.]

It's great to see you, too, Aang! [She laughs a little.] I'm...a lot better than last time, that's for sure.

[It's true. Even if Raiko and the vines are stressing her out, she has a purpose now, and even better? She can share her joy with Aang.]

You'll never believe what's been happening!

[He's a master hugbender that's why. His face brightens up - he doesn't know what's got Korra so excited, but it's so nice to see her looking so happy. Things must really be looking with her.]

You learned how to penguin sled? [He guesses with a cheeky look.]

[She laughs again, pushing Aang back just enough so she can look at his face.]

Please. I knew how to do that ages ago! It's great news. Really....really great.

I think...something happened when I left the portals open. Some non benders can suddenly air bend! Tenzin's talking about taking them in and training them... [Korra smiles at him hopefully.] Don't you see what that means?

[Hey, Jade's jabs are nothing but loving. Okay, maybe only a little loving. Very very slightly. It's only with Dist that his comments are truly malicious. He won't accept anything less than Dist being the local punching bag. Their past is... complicated.]

I'll be sure to look into it. Cockroaches have a way of being more alive than they appear, but that will produce intriguing reactions from students. [He says with a devilish smirk.]

In any case, we'll focus on the frogs for now. There's plenty of other professors to choose from.

[Really, she finds Jade's and Dist relationship sort of cute, if you enjoyed watching people kick puppies anyway. Otherwise, she observes from a safe enough distance that there's no real danger of her walking into the crossfire, but sometimes she has to wonder just how far her fellow professor's willing to go.]

I'm sure we can sneak Erwin in there, or Mike. [She points at two in particular.] They'd certainly appreciate having the fattest named after them.

[Oh, Hange. Always the morbid spectator. Jade wouldn't begrudge her amusement; if he were someone else, he's sure that he and Dist's animosity would be fascinating from a scientific standpoint.]

Oh? Now that's interesting. I'm surprised that the idea didn't occur to me first. [He smirks coyly, and then he pokes at one.] After all, look at this one's slightly enlarged snout. It's only too fighting for Mike. I wonder what he smells?

[Peering in, she suddenly lets out a bark of laughter.]

Probably all the preservatives soaking into his dead body.

[Honestly, they're all pretty cute. It's why she'll turn and reach for the box of gloves on her desk, slipping them on before picking it up.]

I'll have to say that this is an incredibly high quality batch. Did you switch companies?

[He releases a warm chuckle with her added commentary, and he leaves her free to handle the frog.]

Yes, at least for this batch. I was able to squeeze just enough out of the budget to make it possible. [His smirk starts to get devious.] A field trip or two may have been cancelled, but it's all for the sake of a more comprehensive dissection process.

[She laughs a bit.] Looks like that field trip to the decomposition farm has to be postponed for a little longer.

[With that she sets the frog back down, closing the box once she's finished.]

Well, I suppose we should store these in the cooler before we use up even more of the budget. Do you want some company? I still haven't gone out for lunch yet.
